Live streaming

You can use live broadcasts to enhance and maximise direct communications with your audience, including new audiences you want to engage with. Live streaming an event or a one-on-one interview with a researcher gives you the opportunity to reach and interact with more people across the world.

The key things to think about are:

  • Setting – somewhere interesting or related to the researcher’s work (if applicable), low levels of background noise and good lighting levels.
  • Internet connection – a strong Wi-Fi or 4G connection is required
  • Audio – a microphone may be required if you are filming at an event or if you are moving around with the camera
  • Lighting – good natural or artificial lighting levels are crucial

If you have the budget, IT services do provide live streaming as a service. Please contact Educational Media Services at media@it.ox.ac.uk for a quote.

If you would like to live stream yourself, the MPLS Division have two pieces of kit available to borrow:

The Mevo camera syncs with your phone or tablet, which becomes your personal video editing suite — zoom, pan and cut in real-time, all from a single camera and app. This is for one-on-one interviews rather than larger events. Visit the Mevo website for further details.

Blackmagic Web Presenter makes any SDI or HDMI video source appear as a USB webcam for higher quality web streaming. It uses software such as Skype or streaming platforms such as YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Twitch.tv and Periscope. MPLS have two cameras, microphones and lighting to make sure it has a professional look and feel. Visit the Blackmagic website for further details.
